Just a quick post to encourage you to read Amy Kingsley’s article in YES! Weekly: “Homeless find day shelter where they can.” Amy interviewed me and the amazing Liz Seymour (from Greensboro Food Not Bombs) about the need for a day center for the homeless in Greensboro. Read it and pass it on!! Please. :)

Michele, you are so right. Tulsa, where I once lived, had a marvelous one. Check out this website: http://www.tulsadaycenter.org

Wow, Spirit, the reality behind the dream! ;) Cool. Wish we had one like it. But what wasn’t clear was who pays for it?

Different local groups have dreamed about a day center for a long time, but dreams have not translated into dollars thus far. :(
One other concern that I think might come up is that our Task Force will be looking at housing first models with the Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness, and I’m not sure how housing first and day centers go together, if at all they do. I guess that remains to be seen.

Wish I had the answers. But at least we’re raising the questions.

It wasn’t mentioned last night either, but the Council got sidetracked by concerns over eminent domain and decided to continue the matter until December. Maybe I can find out between now and then if anyone has given thought to where our homeless friends will go. What’s my solution? We need a day center!! (And yes, this is one of the issues that the Task Force is addressing, but I want to make sure that the mayor, city manager, and Council connect the dots between displacement caused by redevelopment and solutions to chronic homelessness proposed through the upcoming Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness.)
