I’ve Had My Moments

Momma just called and said, “You have to hear this song I just heard about a homeless man. I think it’s a country song…” She almost lost me right there.* But I’m so glad I decided to search for it! I found the video (above) and the lyrics (after the jump) online.
The song is so real. I actually got chills by the end of it. I’ve heard similar stories from friends on the street, but hearing it in a song (and video) is really powerful.
If anyone has info about the songwriters’ inspiration, please comment.
“Moments,” performed by Emerson Drive
Lyrics written by Annie Tate, Sam Tate, Dave BergI was coming to the end of a long long walk
When a man crawled out of a cardboard box
Under the E. Street Bridge
Followed me on to it
I went out halfway across
With that homeless shadow tagging along
So I dug for some change
Wouldn’t need it anyway
He took it lookin’ just a bit ashamed
He said, You know, I haven’t always been this wayI’ve had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn’t do
Like that plane ride coming home from the war
That summer my son was born
And memories like a coat so warm
A cold wind can’t get through
Lookin’ at me now you might not know it
But I’ve had my momentsI stood there tryin’ to find my nerve
Wondering if a single soul on Earth
Would care at all
Miss me when I’m gone
That old man just kept hanging around
Lookin’ at me, lookin’ down
I think he recognized
That look in my eyes
Standing with him there I felt ashamed
I said, You know, I haven’t always been this wayI’ve had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn’t do
Like the day I walked away from the wine
For a woman who became my wife
And a love that, when it was right,
Could always see me through
Lookin’ at me now you might not know it
But I’ve had my momentsI know somewhere ’round a trashcan fire tonight
That old man tells his story one more time
He saysI’ve had my moments, days in the sun
Moments I was second to none
Moments when I knew I did what I thought I couldn’t do
Like that cool night on the E. Street Bridge
When a young man almost ended it
I was right there, wasn’t scared a bit
And I helped to pull him through
Lookin’ at me now you might not know it
Oh, lookin’ at me now you might not know it
But I’ve had my moments
*I had forgotten how good country music can be. Powerful lyrics + exquisite harmony = beautiful music.

In the vein of homeless songs, check out this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR8AR3heu-w — “Under Bridges” by Brave Saint Saturn. The video accompanying is just the words on the screen, but you may be able to find a better one.
The verbal image at the end - “Under bridges, with hands raised, from the ghettos they praise His name” - makes me tear up! What an awesome vision for our friends!

Just heard this song for the first time today. Glad I was in the car by myself, driving down a country road. Nobody around to see me cry! Beautifully done. WTG Emerson Drive!!
I can’t stop singing it myself…. Love it!
This song is amazing…really hits you right in the soul…I recommend it!!!!
Amazing
Isn’t that Kris Kristofferson as one of the homeless at the end of the video?
I have had my moments and then some… haven’t we all?
The feeling this song evokes is with me every minute of every day. Stopping to buy half dead flowers from a blind man on county farm road, taking money given to me by a rich man and giving it to a man holding a sign on the side of the I-10 in Bay St. Louis, picking up an old man walking home from having lunch at a store on highway 53, my best moments only God has seen.
But…
I wish that I could have been there on a few bridges… saving a man from himself would have to be one hell of a moment, wouldn’t it? I should know but I guess I was too busy having my moments.

i am from the caribbean and i absolutely adore country music i was sort of getting upset because of the new comers trying to change the meaning adding these fast beats and no story. But untill i heard this song i was like yes country music still has a story and even though there not talking about cowboys and there mommas i gain a new appreciation for it i also love carry underwood. Emerson tell your writers they did a good job i get chills everytime i hear this song. i guess the radio station is mad at me because i call and request it so often.
i just love it.
this is probably one of the greatest songs I HAVE EVER HEARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s the most personal and touching song I’ve heard in a long time. Thanks God. Just me.
Anyone notice like Clarence in “It’s a wonderful life”, at the bridge, he rings his bell? Angels earn there wings, yet we don’t notice.
