Each year near the winter solstice, the Homeless Prevention Coalition of Guilford County and thousands of other homeless advocacy groups around the nation, sponsor memorial services to remember our homeless friends who have died over the year. As the life-threatening challenges dramatically increase for the homeless with cold weather, there is not a better time to remember their lives and our commitment to end chronic homelessness by 2017 in Guilford County.

Walkers will gather for a Memorial Walk that will begin at Greensboro Urban Ministry, 305 West Lee Street, at 5:30 p.m., and conclude a half-mile away at Grace Community Church, 643 West Lee Street. A Service will be held at Grace beginning at 6:00 p.m. concluding with a supper being served at 6:30 p.m. for our homeless brothers and sisters.

For more information, contact Rev. Frank Dew, Urban Ministry chaplain, 271-5959×327 or fdew@guministry.org.

Take Action: Mental health parity at risk!

A Mental Health America news alert:

Mental health parity is at risk!

Thousands of people like you made a difference and helped win unanimous Senate passage of the Mental Health Parity Act of 2007 (S. 558) in September. You also helped build broad support for a strong House bill. But we face a growing risk that parity legislation could get lost in the jousting over other priority issues. A failure to enact a parity bill this year could set back the parity movement for a long time. Let’s not let that happen!

Parity is one issue on which there is broad bipartisan agreement. The President has signaled his readiness to sign a bill. The time is now! It’s time for congressional leaders, who’ve said the right thing, to do the right thing!

There is no time to waste! Email your Senators and Member of Congress today and demand that Congress enact a strong parity bill this year! Click on the link below to send your email.

“Special night for women”

From the News & Record:

Women around Greensboro will be treated like queens Saturday evening.

While women in transitional housing, homeless shelters, or drug and alcohol recovery centers are treated to massages, facials, makeovers, manicures and hairstyling, their children will be entertained at the Greensboro Children’s Museum.

“We want to give these women and children something that they couldn’t afford on their own,” said Jeff Phillips, a team leader for Men of Vision & Excellence. “When they come to the museum, they light up when they walk into the front door.”

Nagy Responds: County Center Will Tailor Treatment to Needs

Paul Nagy of the Duke Addictions Program responds to the News & Record’s editorial questions on the new county drug treatment center:

“The scientific/medical community has moved away from assuming that individuals should be treated identically. People are unique, live in different environments, and are exposed to different “triggers” that can break the momentum of recovery. Substance abuse centers across the country are tailoring treatments to individual consumer needs. This is exactly what Bridgeway will be doing.”
