Church Defies City to Shelter the Homeless

A Catholic church in Green Bay, Wisconsin will defy their local City Council and continue to operate the only winter shelter in the area that offers a bed each night to homeless people who are mentally ill or have been drinking. Despite attempts at a compromise, church and City officials were unable to find another location for the shelter, so the Rev. Guy Blair says:

“This is a church that has a right to serve the homeless… We believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ commands us to take care of people who are in need, and that is the essential focus, and it has always been our focus… If they find a new site and the people, the homeless people, want to move to that site, then by all means. This is not a prison, this is not a probation house. People are free to come here and they are also free to leave.”

I guess that’s a church that takes God seriously when he says, “bring the homeless poor into the house.” Amen, Rev. That’s what I call “church.”
