Gimme Shelter

It was stupid cold outside today. Face-freezing cold. I had lunch with Buffy. It was her birthday. We went to Tate Street. We always do. India Palace rocks. On the walk back to my car, we saw five friends. All homeless. (And then two formerly homeless friends.)

One who usually won’t come inside said he finally went to overflow last night. But he didn’t stay. There was a guy there who wouldn’t stop talking. All night. Apparently, he’s kind of famous for it. Our friend couldn’t handle it, so he finally just left. And went back outside in the freezing cold. Because there was nowhere else to go.

Sitting here now thinking about that, my warm, quiet room seems like a sanctuary. A guilty pleasure. Undeserved.

Happy birthday, Buffy. Keep warm tonight, my friends. God bless you, all.

“Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.” — Psalm 121:4
