My youngest child gets half-excited about the prospect of winter weather. No school, of course. And if there’s snow, going outside and throwing snowballs at the windows of the lame adults in the family (like me) who refuse to come outside. ;) But I say “half-excited,” because the other half of him worries (like me) about our homeless friends who are sleeping outside (or in cars or abandoned buildings.) Once you have unsheltered homeless friends, you’ll never look at a “snow day” the same way again.

There will be emergency shelter available tonight at the Salvation Army Center of Hope, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Their overflow (emergency winter) shelter capacity is around 50 people, and it fills up quickly. Greensboro Urban Ministry’s Weaver House will also have emergency shelter available. In addition to their regular shelter capacity of about 100 people, GUM will house another 50 or more people in overflow (waiting on a regular shelter bed) and overnight (emergency shelter.) I’m thankful for Salvation Army and GUM and their staffs, and the shelter and services they provide to our homeless friends.

Greensboro Housing Coalition’s annual Housing Summit is scheduled for tomorrow morning. Please check their web site for updates. If a winter storm hits our area, the summit may be canceled. Update: The summit is on! (But school’s out, so I won’t be there. If someone wants to send me a report, I’ll post it.)
