Chosen Fast, now with WP 2.5 goodness — and a few kinks to work out yet

I just upgraded to WordPress 2.5. Smooth and easy using the automatic upgrade plugin. I like the new admin interface. I’ll have to test drive it a while to see what else I think, before I upgrade my web clients.

Some kinks to work out: My RS Event plugin is no longer working, so although I do have upcoming events, they aren’t showing in my sidebar. And my popular posts plugin doesn’t work either — it wouldn’t even activate. I’m looking for alternatives to those plugins, but also hoping that the plugins will be updated.

I added the Publish to Facebook plugin, so we’ll see how that goes…

Your thoughts on juicy WP 2.5 goodness? Here’s what darkmoon and Sue have to say. (Note to Sue: I’m a coder, too. I’m going to try the visual editor on 2.5 for a while, but it’s weird. I’m also doing the enter twice, delete once thingy. Old habits…)

P.S. I’m not totally getting this whole Facebook plugin…

Update: My homegirl Emily weighs in.

Update, 04/05/2008: My Slideshare plugin doesn’t work, either. Fortunately, there’s an embed option, so I went back and edited those posts.

UDPATE: P.S., In the comments, Tim links us to a FIXED version of RS Event (yay!) and I forgot to add it to the post. Go get it!!

Did you ever find a replacement or update for RS Events? I’ve been using it, too — including hacking it to work with 2.3 — but same as you, I discovered that 2.5 broke it.

    Just checking…

Nope. I upgraded my site first and discovered the RS Event problem, so I’ve held off on upgrading my clients’ sites that use that plugin. And I’m doing a new client site now using an older version of WordPress so that I can use RS Event for them, because they saw it on some of my other sites and wanted it. I’m hoping the author will update it.

I’ve looked at some alternatives, but nothing makes me happy so far. If you have suggestions, feel free to share. And if the plugin gets updated, I’ll happily post about it. :)

Well, right now I’m using wplistcal on our church site, which I upgraded before realizing that RS Event would break. But then I started exploring a bit more, and I kind of like EventCalendar3 — but apparently it needs a hack of some sort applied in order to work with WP 2.5. See the 2.5 Plugin Compatibility list from the WP Codex for the links.

Anyway, I don’t know what I’ll settle on, but I wouldn’t count on RS updating his RS Event plugin. His site has been gone for a while now, and I think the plugin required hacks in order to work with WP 2.3. The author hadn’t updated it, but people were sharing hacks that worked in the comments on his blog. Now his blog is gone…

Oops. I think I goofed those links up. Oh well, I’m sure you can figure it out. :)

    Fixed the link. No problem.

Bad news about the RS Event plugin. I’ll check the ones you suggested.

Sorry it took so long to approve your comments. I’m up late working on another church site. Time to sleep…

    ;)

There is a fixed version of RS Events available. I’ve put it up on my site because I think it is still the best solution for events. You can get it here.
