Had this conversation yesterday:

Cop friend: I was talking to a guy at the shelter the other day, and he said that when we get the day center, homeless people won’t be drinking outside the shelter anymore, they can just go in the day center and drink.

Me: They can drink in the day center?

Cop friend: [Laughing] Yeah.

Me: He said that?

Cop friend: Yeah.

Me: Was this a homeless guy or a staff person?

Cop friend: Staff.

Me: Seriously?

Cop friend: Yeah.

Me: He really thinks that? Wow. We were gonna do AA meetings, but yeah, we should just have a bar in the day center instead. Get a beer distributor to donate 40s. Maybe a room where people can smoke crack, too.

Cop friend: What you do is, you start ‘em off with all the free beer they want, and then you gradually step ‘em down.

Me: Yeah, why didn’t I think of that?

P.S. Yes, we were being sarcastic. Like me, my cop friend is very much interested in seeing our substance-abusing homeless friends get clean and sober and off the street, and in creating a meaningful place for them (and other homeless folks) to build community and access resources. And no, we won’t be having any alcohol-serving (or BYOB) day centers.
