Bloggers and readers: I need your help, please

Update #3: Breakfast will be served on the “front deck” at Grace Community Church at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday and Friday (8/14 and 8/15) and dinner will be served by the picnic benches at the downtown library on Friday (8/15) at 6:00 p.m.  To my friends on the street who read this blog (and to advocates and providers), please spread the word.   Thanks!

Update #2: OK, A. God is so great, and good all the time, and B. people are just awesome.  We’re getting a terrific response from people wanting to come help us cook and serve. (At 7:00 in the morning, no less.  I mean, that really is awesome! I’m probably gonna just show up in my pajamas at that ridiculous hour.)  And a number of people are donating money to buy food.  And Salvation Army is letting us use their kitchen to cook and the thrift store to keep our stuff in and DREAMS just emailed that they can probably help, too.  I’m waiting to hear from the place whose parking lot we want to serve in.  (No plan B, so hopefully, they’ll say “yes.”)  And also, Elizabeth emailed and asked if I’d do the inspirational moment for the coalition meeting on Thursday.  I said “yes.”  I have to pray about what I’m going to say, but I think I’m going to start with, “Hear this, my friends, the LORD provides…” :)

Update: We are focusing on breakfast for Thursday and Friday morning, and dinner for Friday. You may bring food and drink items to the Salvation Army thrift store at 307 W. Lee St. in Greensboro. Drive up to the covered entrance on the side and they’ll unload it for you. Please tell them it’s for NIGHTWATCH, so they’ll put it in our storage area in the back of the thrift store. If you need a tax receipt, please leave your name, address and list of what you’re donating. Or, email me to arrange dropping off your donation. Use my contact form or email chosenfast (at) untangledweb.net. Things we need that you could buy and drop off: pastry items (muffins, doughnuts, danish rolls, etc.); bananas, apples, oranges; bottled water; bottled juices; bottled sports drinks. Things we need that you could donate money for (perishable stuff): meat for soup/stew for Friday dinner; butter; cheese.

======================

I found out late last night that the Hospitality House is closed this week. They normally serve breakfast for 130-180 homeless people on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, and also dinner on Friday nights. They are the only organization serving breakfast for homeless people on those days, and the only one serving dinner on Friday nights right now, because NightWatch is on a break until the beginning of September.

So, some friends and I would like to provide breakfast for as many days this week as possible, and Friday dinner, as well, and we could really use your help. If you can donate food, that would be great. If you have a garden, please donate vegetables. You can also donate breakfast foods, or items to make dinner on Friday. You can cook something. You can make a financial donation and we’ll buy and cook. If you need it to be tax-deductible, let me know. We can have you donate it through one of the non-profits we work with. We’d like to serve breakfast tomorrow (and Thursday and Friday. Greensboro Urban Ministry serves breakfast on Wednesday.) So if you can help, please let me know now. Click here to contact me or email chosenfast (at) untangledweb.net. Thank you for considering this.

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ — Matthew 25:34-40

    Val, you make me smile. Thanks for the encouragement. I’m just glad that God keeps letting me hang out with Him and being where He’s doing stuff. It is so cool. I don’t deserve it at all, but I’m real thankful for it.
