Friday\'s dinner at the libraryTim, Lowell and I spent Friday afternoon in the kitchen of the Salvation Army church cooking and preparing the evening meal.  Tim and Lowell cook regularly for Food Not Bombs, and they are pros in the kitchen.

We cooked/prepared/baked: baked beans, baked yams, barbecued pork chops, chicken and pasta, pasta and vegetables, mixed green salad, cakes and brownies.

We also served already-prepared: fried chicken, potato salad, dinner rolls and sliced breads, cookies, brownies, cakes, fudge and candy, soft drinks and juice.

It was a feast.

As we were loading my truck to take the food to the library to serve, it started raining.  Tim called the library and I called the City.  Our plan was to try to serve in a meeting room at the library or inside the parking deck.  We got a “yes” from the library before we got an answer back from the City, but then the rain stopped.  By the time we got to the library, the sun was out and we were able to serve outside.  (Thank you to the library for offering the room!)

We served about 150 people at the library, with 50 or more coming back for seconds.   We also delivered meals and desserts to half a dozen recently housed friends who weren’t able to get to the dinner.  We gave a pan of pasta and veggies, and some eggs, vegetables and bread to Food Not Bombs to serve at their Monday night dinner for the homeless.

Our awesome servers for the Friday dinner were: Tim, Lowell, Deb, Carole, Al, Robert, Justin, Myron and GPD Officers Tepedino and Menshew.  (Yep, cops serving the homeless.  Sweet.)  I took a bunch of pictures with Deb’s camera and I’ll hopefully have those up soon.

One of my recently housed friends, who ate with us on Friday, called me last night and said, “Thank you, Michele.  It’s a good thing y’all did serving all that food.  Didn’t nobody else think to do it.  And where would they have got food on Friday if y’all didn’t do that?” I didn’t even want to think about that.  I just thank God and the people He sent to help us.  Amen.
