Talking to a girlfriend today about a mutual friend whose addiction is slowly, but surely, killing our friendship. She said, “You gotta hear this song.”

[Sigh.] Yeah…. what she said.  Love my friends.  Hate, hate, hate addiction.

Lyrics below.

Call Me When You’re Sober lyrics

Don’t cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.

Should I let you fall?
Lose it all?
So maybe you can remember yourself.
Can’t keep believing,
We’re only deceiving ourselves.
And I’m sick of the lie,
And you’re too late.

Don’t cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.

Couldn’t take the blame.
Sick with shame.
Must be exhausting to lose your own game.
Selfishly hated,
No wonder you’re jaded.
You can’t play the victim this time,
And you’re too late.

Don’t cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
You want me,
Come find me.
Make up your mind.

You never call me when you’re sober.
You only want it cause it’s over,
It’s over.

How could I have burned paradise?
How could I - you were never mine.

So don’t cry to me.
If you loved me,
You would be here with me.
Don’t lie to me,
Just get your things.
I’ve made up your mind.

Amy Lee’s lyrics about the breakup with her boyfriend are both unique to her experience and the same as we all experience. The lies, playing the victim, blaming everything / everyone else, the rampant self-deception. It is the MO of the substance when it is calling the shots. It’s sad we all experience what she has written about as her personal situation - we would so like for our loved one’s situation to be different, but when something else has been allowed to be in charge, the results are sadly predictable and universal.

And as she says, he has to make up his mind about who/what is going to be in charge of his life. All we can do is pray he’ll choose to take back control.

Amen. I’m praying that for so many people. Too many.

People do not understand the lost feeling of being out of control and wanting so badly to take control. Forgive me; but some can not even amagine what it is like with addiction even though they have had extensive years of research. Isolation is the worst thing in addiction!

Misfit: Agreed. Unless you’ve been there, you can’t understand. And that’s really frustrating for those of us who haven’t been there, but who are trying to love and support people with addictions. It’s so hard to know what to do.
