Homeless helping homeless

This weekend, I learned that a homeless friend got a temporary job with a catering company during furniture market, and that he’s been bringing home containers of leftover food and making up plates to feed other homeless people at night.  I also saw another homeless friend ride up on a bike with plastic grocery bags full of clothing tied to the handlebars.  He got off the bike, opened the bags and rummaged through them, and then silently handed out shirts and pants to the homeless guys I was talking to.  “Thanks, man,” one said.  “We help each other out,” said the other one, with a smile.

  1. Those are AWESOME stories. I love it.

  2. I see acts like this every day… Too bad the people who could end homelessness spend all their time treating symptoms rather than by treating the causes.

    Step 1. Tent cities.

  3. I would like to start a shelter here in concord I don’t know where to begain. may-be you could help?

  5. Kathy: I’ve never worked at a shelter, but if I was going to start a shelter, I would probably start by talking to homeless and formerly homeless people, and asking them what has worked for them and not worked for them at previous shelters, and what their needs are. Most people start with the “professionals” (I don’t mean me, lol), people who are service providers, rather than service receivers. I’d start on the street. Find out what people want and need. Get homeless or formerly homeless people invested first. Then approach people who’ve done it before. But I’d look for people who have actively involved homeless people in the day to day operation of their shelters. I have come to know that homeless services that don’t include homeless people as equals and as fellow partners, are dehumanizing and doomed to fail in restoring and healing homeless people. They may warehouse people, but that will never be enough. Serve people in ways that respect them and restore their dignity and humanity and their ability to choose for themselves. I hope that helps. God bless your efforts.

To Start a Shelter, you would ofcourse nees a Good size House format You could adapt a structer and devide it for men and women and have left to right upper and lower and to the adapting entrance have the rest room and a place across for showers, establish a kitch with room and a place for storage, three particulars if so #1 food #2 Extra cloths #3 Personal place for bags and coat.

Next step of thought or could as well be the first is a jump start on a non Profit Organization, as to have volenteers, and or some payed help, You will have to establish the forms to start a non profit. Allthough finacially and through time as to haveing a statement to inform others as the costs and proceedures to expand is another way.

Building a place to economically afford to house people is a step of concern, for example I stay at a house though from a shelter and now going back to the shelter, it is Noah Shelter Hyannis there i will servive, economically I am not structured to be here at this time, for the asking fee is four hundred and another hundred for whatever i guess. See when i got into this Home hich was established just a year ago the two individuals called their Organization Homeless Not Hopless, Inc. ‘you can search it and go to its section as to see how much is spent, this is a non profit Organization I got involved with under the agreement that i would pay a fee f $375.00 a month and “”IF”" I had or was to get food stamps I was to assert my needs and express some help as to where if someone was short atleast I could offer Coffee and a meal, Ocationally a Guest staying for a spell would need something, allthough the food pantries were affordable as well and keeping a stock pile comes in handy, Food does not go to waste, especially in any Homeless inviroment.

So if it’s a non profit seek the internet for it though also check things like Organization, you might have to get a lawer or someone to help with the paperwork. A fee of aprox $500.00 is perhaps recommended for the starter. I reside for now at 134 Ocean Street Hyannis Ma 02601 and will be at 77 Wnter street same town this perticular place i am now is owned by the Yaught Club they have a number of places, cool idea to find a group whom has multiple dwellings.
