‘If it wasn’t for police, we’d freeze to death’
Fox8 interviewed some of our homeless friends (Mississippi, Junior and Bobby) and one of the GPD cops we partner with (Tim Tepedino) about the freezing temperatures and the lack of shelter. (Story, video.)
Junior said:
“If it wasn’t for police officers coming down here helping homeless people right here, we’d be freezing ourselves to death.”
I’ve been bringing blankets to the downtown police officers from our outreach supplies (from NightWatch, StreetWatch and Grace), for them to give to unsheltered homeless people in the downtown area. (One of the officers calls us “the blanket coalition.”) They’ve received other donations, as well. Today, Tim and I sorted through NightWatch donations and found coats, hats and boots for some of the guys.Â
NOTE: We always need additional donations. See our needs lists at StreetWatchGreensboro.com if you’d like to help.
I am continually thankful for the help and support of the officers on the Center City Resource Team, as well as the other officers that we work with in serving homeless people. It’s great to partner with people who care about our homeless friends as much as we do.
Now, let’s see what we can do about getting some more emergency winter shelter…
