Meal site closed for two weeks — need to feed 150+ homeless people
The Homeless Hospitality House on Arlington Street has closed again, this time until Nov. 13th, due to the director’s health concerns. Please pray with us for Miss Terry’s speedy recovery, and for a time of rest and healing. We love you and appreciate you, Miss Terry.
Arlington House (as it’s usually known) serves 150+ for breakfast four mornings each week and dinner on Friday evenings. It is the only location in Greensboro where unsheltered homeless people can take showers. Many homeless people use Arlington House as a mailing address and use the phone there.
A group of us are working on alternatives for the meals. We can cook at the Food Not Bombs kitchen at the HVIE. We have contacted a church that may be able to handle the additional breakfast guests on Mondays and Fridays, and we’re waiting to hear from them. We’re waiting to hear back from a church about whether or not we can serve breakfast there on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and dinner on Fridays. (Greensboro Urban Ministry does breakfast on Wednesdays.)
We need donations of food, money and volunteers. Donations are tax deductible. Please visit our StreetWatch web site for more information on how you can help. We are seeing more homeless and hungry people on the street, including families with children. Please pass on your blessings and help us feed them.
UPDATE: Jehan Benton just got us bacon and eggs for all the breakfasts from Westover Church! Yes! Thank you! Jehan, Audrie, Travis and I are at Panera on New Garden now, planning…
UPDATE #2: Jehan talked to First Lutheran. They are giving a financial donation and juice for all the breakfasts! We’re getting there. What can YOU do?
UDPATE #3: Westminster Presbyterian is going to pay for paper products (plates, utensils, cups, etc.)
UPDATE #4: Still waiting to hear if we can serve at Grace… We need fruit, breakfast pastries, and food for the two dinners. Anybody want to donate chicken or BBQ?
UPDATE #5: Food donations can be dropped off at the HIVE at 1214 Grove Street, Monday thru Friday, between noon and 6:00 p.m. Please contact us ahead of time so that we can coordinate food donations. Contact info is here, or you can call or IM me. (If you need a tax receipt, you have to let me or Audrie know. There won’t be anyone at the HIVE who can do that, but we can get that for you through StreetWatch.)
UPDATE #6: Brenda Bowers responded (as always, thank you!) and she and her husband are going to volunteer and donate.
UPDATE #7: DayStar Christian Fellowship is making a large financial donation and is considering opening their church as an emergency shelter this winter. Y’all, we are getting so excited! We are still at Panera, meeting and eating. Me, Jehan, Audrie, Travis and Liz… Stay tuned.
UPDATE #8: Leaving Panera to go buy food.

Yay I’m so excited reading each update! Thank you so much for posting all this. I wanted to be there and couldn’t.
Thank you, Father, for pulling this all together.
