NightWatch: Friday, Nov. 28th — Have food, need drivers and volunteers

IF YOU CAN HELP, POST TO THE GOOGLE GROUP OR RESPOND IN THIS THREAD AT THE STREETWATCH BLOG. THANKS!

UPDATE: We are looking for commercial refrigerator space (a walk-in cooler, like at a restaurant, grocery or convenience store) to keep the boxes of food from Thanksgiving morning until Friday afternoon.  Can you help?  Please email us at outreach@streetwatchgreensboro.com.  Thank you!) Looks like we got this covered. God is so awesome.

I just posted this message to our NightWatch Google group:

NightWatch Thanksgiving 2007I have requested enough food from the Community Foundation’s Thanksgiving fund to feed 100 people.  We usually get turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, green beans, dressing, cranberry sauce and bread.

Go to this page and scroll down to “Thanksgiving” to see photos of what we got before:

NEEDED:

1.) We need to pick up the food from the Greensboro Urban Ministry loading dock on Thanksgiving morning at 9:30am.  Who wants to help with that? (We have volunteers for this! Thanks!)

2.) We need to store the food somewhere from Thursday morning until Friday afternoon.  It’s in bulk and has to be refrigerated.  There will be a LOT of it.  Suggestions for where we can store it? Done.

3.) The food has to be warmed up before it can be served on Friday evening.  We need a kitchen to warm the food in (the HIVE?  Salvation Army church?  DayStar?  anybody want to volunteer?)We will warm the food at the HIVE (thank you!) and we need volunteers to warm up the food on Friday afternoon. (We have some and can use a few more.) Got volunteers!

UPDATE, 11/28/2008: There has been an unexpected change in plans. We were supposed to get food for 100 AND individual containers.  Instead, we got food for 100 IN individual containers.  That means that rather than warming and serving the food, we’ll have to microwave each meal separately as we serve it to our friends.  So we will not need volunteers at the HIVE at 4pm to warm food.  Volunteers may still come to the Salvation Army Family Store at 5:45pm.  Thank you!4.) We need to serve the food Friday night, either on NightWatch or at a location in the downtown area where our friends can come to us. (And if we do the stationary location, I may need to ask for more food.  Is 100 enough?)  We need drivers** for the disaster unit and van (whether we’re mobile or in one location, we still need vehicles and drivers) will serve the food on Friday night around 6:00 p.m. from the parking lot of the Salvation Army thrift store (we have drivers for the vehicles, thank you!) and we need volunteers to help serve. (We have some and could use a few more.) Got volunteers!

OK everybody, please respond!!  I need your feedback, thoughts, suggestions and what you can commit to doing!  If we don’t get a response, we don’t get the food and we don’t serve our homeless and hungry friends that Friday night.  And nobody else is serving that night.  So we’re it.

Peace,
Michele

Last year, we were joined by other community volunteers, in addition to our regular NightWatch team members, and everyone is welcome to volunteer with us this year, as well, so I’m posting it here.

Also, if you’ve been part of our NightWatch team or would like to be, but you aren’t in our Google group yet, please go here and join.  (If you don’t have a Google account and don’t want one, contact me.  I think I can invite you by email and you won’t have to have a Google account.  I think…) If you’re not sure if the NightWatch team is for you, check out the “Volunteer” page at NightWatchGreensboro.com.

**Has to be NightWatch team members who are already certified to drive the Salvation Army disaster unit and/or van.

UPDATE, 11/25/2008: THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO RESPONDED.  LOOKS LIKE EVERYTHING IS COVERED. THIS IS GOING TO BE A GREAT NIGHT!!  THANK YOU, LORD!!

  1. What time do you want to do the warming? We’ve got the Really Really Free Market at the HIVE from 10:00 to 3:00 (everyone should come!), but that doesn’t necessarily rule out warming up really really free food. I don’t see anything else on the HIVE calendar that evening. Let me know….

  2. Liz, I’m emailing you… Thanks!

  3. i would love to help serve friday, antonio

  4. Thanks, Tonio. I’m emailing you now.
