From Liz Seymour:

The Interactive Resource Center (IRC) is the daytime counterpart to the winter emergency shelter WE! Program. It has come together very quickly with the help and skills of homeless people, community advocates, people from the faith community, and former city council members, and like the WE! Program, is designed to build community as well as provide for basic needs. The new IRC has opened its doors with emergency assistance from the Weaver Foundation, the Moses Cone-Wesley Long Community Health Foundation, the City of Greensboro, and Operation Greensboro Cares. It will operate as a pilot program through March 15.

The IRC is located in the education building of Bessemer United Methodist Church, 3015 E. Bessemer Avenue (the church is already home to The Blessed Table food pantry and thrift store); we will be open from 9:00 to 5:00, Monday through Friday. Our first order of business will be to outfit a shower and laundry room, which we are doing with the help of a local contractor and volunteers. In the next few weeks we will also be adding programming to aid in job skills, job searches and other services. We welcome volunteers, ideas, advice—anything you care to share.

The grand opening of the IRC was on January 14th. The phone number is 336-332-0824. Call or drop by to visit, volunteer or donate.

I visited the IRC a few hours before the grand opening, along with my 3-year old niece.  She got to play while I toured and visited.  We had a great time, but had to leave before the official opening.

Showers and laundry facilities are coming soon.  It was good to see a lot of homeless friends working to get the center ready.  I’m hoping that their great work at the IRC will lead to housing and jobs.
