EvanAs part of the 2009 HBO Documentary Film Series, HBO will be airing Boy Interrupted on Monday, August 3rd.

Boy Interrupted, directed by Dana Perry, tells the heartbreaking true story of Evan Perry, a 15-year-old boy who jumped to his death from his New York City bedroom after a life of struggling with bipolar disorder. A 2009 Sundance Film Festival selection, this documentary recounts Evan’s life and death in the words of his parents, who are also the filmmakers.

There’s a phrase I hear a lot when people talk to addicts and alcoholics in recovery: “You have to change your playground.” That means leaving behind the people and the places associated with your drinking and drugging. Makes sense. But until I saw it happening to friends, I didn’t realize that leaving the playground is about more than being tempted by your old life — it’s about getting away from people who are still in active addiction and who try to get you back there, too.

It has been about three months since city officials shut down a large “tent city” occupied by Sacramento’s homeless people. Now, some of the tent city’s residents say they feel like refugees, with no place to go.

“…I think I understand more than most the plight of homeless people after they have a home. getting A flat or some kind of accommodation is only part of the battle. The battle to break the habit of homelessness it’s self is the toughest. It doesn’t matter how good you are at keeping a flat clean and tidy or that you have food. It’s this thing that the streets brings you I suppose you could call it the survival instinct you don’t want to lose it so you keep going back to the streets because that’s what you know so well…”
