Don Ames: Visiting the artist at his camp (photos!)

UPDATE: Good news! As of October 2011, Don Ames is no longer homeless!!

Today, Derek Dunham and I went to visit our friend Don Ames at his camp near downtown Greensboro. Don is a woodworker, doing beautiful fretwork pieces that he sells at the IRC during First Fridays downtown. Don uses solar energy to power the tools he uses for his fretwork. He’s hoping to save up enough money to move from the camp into his own home. If you’re interested in buying some of Don’s pieces, go to the IRC on the next First Friday, or leave me a comment and I’ll put you in touch with him.

Beautiful work! Loved his feature in the latest issue of UNCG’s Alumni Magazine (Spring 2013). Very inspiring!

I’m in MA. Just read about Don in the UNCG Mag.. Can I buy online? Does Don sell on Etsy.com? If not he should.

Amy, the students at UNCG set up a web site for him, but I talked to him yesterday and he said that it’s easiest for him to take orders by phone. You may call or text him at 336-681-1492.
