A friend contacted me yesterday to tell me that police were no longer allowing people to stand on “the block,” a well-known and long-time gathering spot at the corner of Lee and Eugene Streets near the homeless shelter, soup kitchen and health clinic.  Traditionally, most of the people who stood out on the corner were homeless, and many of them spent their time on the block drinking. Today, I received reports from a number of sources with information about what may have led to the clearing of the block.

gno-backOn Friday night, May 15th, hundreds of area youth are expected to sleep outside at Grace Community Church on Lee Street to raise awareness of homelessness, in an event sponsored by New Jerusalem Cathedral (see video). They will sleep in safety, protected by Greensboro police officers, on the same grounds that church leaders voted to post with “no trespassing” signs last year, in response to large numbers of homeless people sleeping on the property.  Irony.   (Grace also housed dozens of women inside this year, in a winter emergency shelter.)

In the days before his death, Thomas Pauli, a homeless man in Grand Rapids, Michigan, tried to get a bed at two different shelters, but was turned away.  Both shelters are within 1,000 feet of Central Catholic High School.  Pauli, a sex offender, was prohibited from residing at the shelters, even for a night.  And the shelters are near public parks, also prohibited areas for sex offenders.  So Pauli slept outside, behind a recycling shop.  That’s where his lifeless body was found, crouched on hands and knees in the snow, apparently frozen to death.

HealthServe at the Winter Series

Armed with stethoscopes and blood pressure cuffs, medical staffers from the HealthServe Community Clinic paid a visit to this week’s Winter Series at the downtown library. While diners enjoyed the vegan meal prepared by members of Food Not Bombs, they also had the chance to talk with a nurse and have their vital signs checked. Brochures on the tables described the clinic’s services for uninsured and underinsured Greensboro residents.

Hogg's BBQ

I went to the annual ConvergeSouth Barbecue at David and Jinni Hoggard’s on Friday night. It was great to see my blogging friends.

At the end of the evening, Hogg asked if I wanted to take the rest of the food (there was lots left!) to feed some of our homeless friends. Since it was Friday night, the NightWatch team was already out, so I called and they sent the van by to pick up the food. I’ve since heard from the night’s team leader that the barbecue was a big hit with our friends and much appreciated!

0 to 7 Stages of Crack Cocaine Use and Withdrawal Pattern

0) Currently using: Auditory hallucinations, hypertensive, hyper vigilant. During usage a person may think they hear sirens, cars pulling up outside, music, people talking, etc. Some people will experience tactile hallucinations such as skin crawling or seeing bugs on their skin. They will be extremely alert to the point of paranoia — perhaps suspicious of any movement around the area where they are using. It is common to hide out in the area where use is occurring and refuse to answer the door.

The Greensboro City Council is considering cutting $42,000, or 33%, from emergency assistance funding. Emergency assistance is part of the City’s Homeless Prevention funding, and it goes to several local agencies, including Greensboro Urban Ministries, the Salvation Army, Mary’s House and Family Services of the Piedmont.
